Due to its modular design, the MG5 is a highly flexible machine gun with night fighting capability. It can be used as a support weapon on a ground target mount, integrated cross-sectionally as vehicle armament or as an infantryman’s hand weapon. Depending on the application, there is the possibility of choosing between a 550 mm or 460 mm barrel length. The barrels can be exchanged effortlessly by the user - even without gloves when hot from firing, thanks to the barrel carrying handle. The MG5’s rate of fire can be adjusted to 640, 720 or 800 rounds per minute by the machine gunner, depending on its intended use or degree of fouling. The adjustable buttstock, bipod, assault grip and many other accessories provide customisation options to suit the shooter’s mission, equipment and stature.
Many features of the MG5 are not visible at first glance, but are of utmost importance for shooter safety. For instance, the MG5’s barrels are fully able to withstand barrel obstruction using steel- and soft-core ammunition as per NATO AC225/D14. The integrated barrel lock prevents the barrel from being accidentally released from its locking device. The clamped-on heat shield protects against burns when the barrel is hot from firing. Thanks to the two-tier belt feed system, the belt traction performance is consistently reliable in ammunition feed, regardless of environmental and weather conditions. Sear notches and trigger safety catches on the receiver of the focal weapon prevent uncontrolled breech movements. In addition, the MG5 shooter can engage and disengage the safety in any load state.
